?

Since 1995, SID has been awarding Gold and Silver Display of the Year Awards (DYAs), known as the industry's most prestigious honors, annually in three categories: Display of the Year, Display Application of the Year, and Display Component of the Year. The internationally acclaimed Display of the Year Award selects its recipients from an extremely competitive field to honor demonstration of novel and outstanding features, and innovative approaches.

"It is our deep honor for AUO’s 55-in. 4K x 2K 2D/3D switchable glasses-free TV display to be able to stand out among the many contestants and win SID’s Gold Award of 2012 Display of the Year," said Paul Peng, President of AUO. AUO’s Gold Award winning 55-in. 4K x 2K 2D/3D switchable glasses-free TV display is the world’s first 4K x 2K TV display as well as currently the largest(*) glasses-free 4K x 2K 3D TV display commercially available. Its application, the 55-in. 4K x 2K 2D/3D switchable glasses-free TV, made its debut in Japan last December. The display incorporates proprietary technology to offer exceptional viewing experience with extreme comfort. It features a 4K x 2K (or “quad-HD”) resolution of 3840 x 2160 for the most vivid and lifelike 2D images. Then, with a simple switch, the 3D format is instantly available, supporting up to nine positions with the built-in face-tracking camera. No dead zone exists to ensure the highest viewing quality possible. Furthermore, AUO’s leading lenticular lens 3D technology makes glasses no longer a prerequisite to perceiving excellent 3D images. The audience can now sit back in their preferred positions and enjoy an extremely pleasant and comfortable viewing experience. For AUO’s partners, this glasses-free 3D solution also allows for easy incorporation with their current systems. The high compatibility heralds the growing commercialization of 4K x 2K 2D/3D switchable glasses-free TV displays in a new glasses-free 3D era.

?

In addition to the award acknowledgement, AUO’s superior R&D strengths also manifest in its roles at the 2012 SID Display Week. For the SID Business Conference that took place on June 4th, Mr. Wei-Lung Liau, Associate Vice President of AUO’s Display Technology Development Center, was invited to speak on “AUO Glasses-free 3D Technology Evolution,” which illustrated the great strides AUO made to offer constantly enhanced 3D solutions and more pleasant viewing experience. AUO’s delegation is also participating from June 5th to 8th to make oral presentations and publish papers at the 2012 SID Special Technology Tracks. Special areas covered include 3D, AMOLED, and Flexible Electrophoretic Displays, which will hopefully serve as impetus and inspiration for further exchange of ideas and advancements of technologies among the display industry peers.
